If you're interested in taking up computers and want to be a computer programmer then what follows may be of some use to you if for no other reason than it will prepare you for what you can expect to find in a computer programming curriculum. An associate of mine was a computer programming instructor, still keeps up with the latest and has provided the information below.

A computer programming curriculum, as opposed to the old days, is a very intensive course study. It can take as long as 2 years to complete some programs. But there are some basics that you can expect to learn in all programs.

The first course you are most likely to run into when going to school for computer programming is logic. This is a course where they teach you to think like a machine. While this may sound difficult or close to impossible, it is actually the easiest part of the course, though a part that many people have trouble with. Understanding how a computer actually thinks is an abstract concept, but it is important if you, as a programmer, are going to be able to construct programs that won't crash and burn in the middle of execution.

Computer Training - Computer Programming

The logic course then branches out into what is called flowcharting. This is where the student is taught how to graphically represent on grid paper just what it is that the program or system is supposed to do. No actual programming language is taught here, as the flowcharts are done in simple English, but these flowcharts are the foundations for every well designed computer program.

After the flowcharting section is complete, the student is usually given a simple programming language to learn. The simplest and most fundamental is a language called BASIC, which stands for Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. BASIC was one of the first higher level languages created and is still used mostly for instructional purposes today.

After the student has his first taste of actually writing computer instruction code, he then moves into the part of the course where he is going to learn the languages he intends to use on the job. There are many languages to choose from and each program has its own core language requirements.

For those who want to go into simple programming of applications, that will be used to do mostly batch processing of jobs, a student may learn languages like COBOL or RPG, though these languages are not as much in demand today as they were in the 80s.

If a student wants to go onto object oriented, or what is called Windows programming, he may learn languages like C++, Visual BASIC or Delphi.

In either case, if a student wants to get into systems programming then he will most likely have to learn a very low level language like Assembler. These languages, unlike the higher level languages that are very English oriented, are very far removed from English and are more difficult to learn.

By the time the average programmer is done with the entire course he probably knows 2 or 3 different languages and has a concentration of knowledge in at least one particular field such as GUI or some other design.

Most courses will require you to submit a final real world project at the end of the course in order to earn your certificate.

Computer programming as a profession is an excellent field with many opportunities since most of our world is now run by computers. Just be prepared to put in a lot of long hours of study.

If you have been using Access for a while, you may be familiar with SQL. SQL (Structured Query Language) is the language used to manipulate the records in your database. It is the language behind the queries and the recordsets. In fact, when you built a query in Access, you actually use a SQL statement.

You can also use SQL statements in VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) programming language. VBA and SQL work very well together and are powerful tools to use in your Access applications. With them, you can add more functionality to your programs.

Sometimes it is useful to limit the number of records that are displayed on a form, based on certain criteria. You may also want to sort the information on a column.

How can you accomplish this?

First, you open a form in design view. Then bind a query to this form. Let 's say you have a query named qryCustomers, which contains the names of your customers and the names of the cities where they reside.

Next, you define which records from this query will be selected when the user clicks an option on the form. For example, if the user can choose from three options, you write a Select SQL statement with three different Where and Order by clauses to retrieve the data.

In addition, you put an option group with three option buttons on the form. Every option will select another set of records to be displayed on the form.

Finally, assign a name to the option group control. Right-click the control and from the menu choose Build Event. Then from the Builder menu, choose Code Builder. This opens the VBA editor. Select the After Update event. Now put the SQL statements in the code module.

First, define two variables to compose a SQL string.

Next, put a select statement in a string to retrieve all the records from your query.

What is Purpose?

In a sense, purpose goes beyond our physical and emotional needs. When we look at purpose, we don't look at it so much as a need but as a higher extension of our reason for being. But purpose goes beyond our immediate needs. It is in a sense identifying our reason for being. What is the purpose of our being here on earth? What is the special influence we are meant to have here? What is our pre-ordained duty to justify our existence? We aren't just here by coincidence or accident. We each have a purpose for being here. Purpose is much more expansive than need. Purpose is not concerned merely with survival whereas when we identify our needs, we see them as what we must have to survive in this life. What is Purpose?

Having said that, your passion, inner fire or inner drive does stem from a certain need, but it's more a higher self need than a primal human need. Need can be erratic according to whim or immediate desire like a momentary burst of addiction, whereas purpose as a more stable, solid foundation from which to build a life plan. When needs are met, they lose their impetus. Purpose is a constantly evolving plan that certainly builds momentum, but when following your purpose, you are in control because the Universe works with you. When need is the driving force, you can alienate attraction and the Universe because it goes contrary to their Laws.

Purpose does not contain elements of fight-or-flight which need does. Need's intensity goes through peaks and valleys, up and down, Purpose follows a well-mapped road to its destination. Further, need needs extreme often external motivation which cannot be sustained unless circumstances are drastic, while purpose is motivated from within, from your inner genius.

As you fulfill your purpose, you will automatically also fulfill some of your needs, but these needs will not be met as a result of desperation but by design.

What does this mean? It means that it is imperative that you work out what your purpose is so that you don't scurry through your days, months and your life just trying to survive. If you don't have an altruistic purpose for your life, you'll be living from need to need to need. The result? You feel a void, an emptiness, a restlessness which you will not be able to explain.

We have been given a more complex than lower mammals, an extended brain that longs to be challenged and conversely wants to give back with more neurons to keep being extended.

When you expand your basis needs and live your purpose, you expand your life. As you live this life for yourself, you also help others do the same.

The big question is. How do I discover what my purpose is?
